Looking for the ultimate island for a getaway? Look no further than Sal island in Cape Verde.
Amy and I are regulars to the island, having first visited back in 2009. We’ve watched the island grow and transform, but keep its motto “No Stress”.
We’re such super fans that we wanted to share our experiences and make the ultimate travel guide for anybody thinking about visiting.
Below you’ll find an introduction to what’s great about Sal in Cape Verde, the booking details for our favourite apartment and a downloadable travel guide to the island. We’ve also included a contact form in case you want to reach us with any burning questions. Enjoy, and “No Stress” 😉
What’s great about Sal island in Cape Verde?
If you’re looking for a laid back island retreat without the crowds of the Caribbean, Cape Verde should be high up on your list. Sal island is a small desert island with a stunning beach town on the southern tip, Santa Maria.
Santa Maria is a tourist town, but not in the way you might be used to. Plenty of businesses have popped up in the form of cafes, hotels, restaurants and bars, but it still retains a laid back feel. The town is fronted by endless sandy beaches, which you can make the most of as Sal is known as the ‘sunny island’.
The temperature throughout the year rarely dips below 24 C, and regularly tips over 30 C. The sea is always warm enough for a dip, and there are endless beach front restaurants to soak up the sun. Go between November and March if you’re into watersports – the trade winds pick up at this time of year which the windsurfing and kite surfing communities make the most of.
Thanks to the year round winds, humidity is rarely too much of a problem. Be prepared to pack a hair band if you have long hair, as the winds are continuous. Some people are put off after reading about the winds, but they really are refreshing and prevent you overheating – just be careful not to burn!
Apartment no. 1 Lleme Bedje
If you choose to visit Sal in Cape Verde, you’ll need to choose between the hotel complexes, a few B&B’s or an apartment. There are some large resorts both in and a short drive from Santa Maria, should you prefer this type of accommodation.
Personally, we’ve always preferred renting apartments and making our own home-from-home. We prefer eating what we fancy, being able to cook the odd meal and the isolation of our own place. Since 2009 we’ve been regular visitors to this particular apartment, and we love it. The owners, Sara and Mark, are a lovely couple from the UK. We’ve built a close relationship with them over the years and we now manage the rental of the apartment for them.
The one bedroom apartment is in the Lleme Bedje apartment complex. It’s a 10 minute stroll from the centre of Santa Maria. We love the location as it’s quiet, beach fronted and close enough to wander around the town, but far enough away that you can’t hear the evening buzz when you want a romantic candlelit meal on the apartment terrace.
Combine a huge outdoor beach front terrace with a shared swimming pool in manicured gardens and you’ve got something special. There’s a king size double bed, all the necessities and a beautifully decorated large open plan kitchen/dining room. The sun loungers on the terrace are particularly comfortable, and you’ll find sunny and shady spots throughout the day.
A couple of steps from the terrace and you’ll find the huge white sandy beach. Angulos restaurant and windsurfing school is moments away offering amazing pizzas from their stone pizza oven, delicious breakfasts and a great supply of coffee, beers and cold drinks.
If you’d like to see more about the apartment take a look at the listing on Owners Direct.
